"Soup of the Day"...just got serious!

It takes courage to try something when you are uncertain of the outcome. If you put your head down and commit your best effort, you will grow, learn, and become more resilient and confident. All this irrespective of whether or not you achieve “success”. The skills you acquire help you approach other risks in more effective ways and increase your chances of being successful in the future. This is the stuff that heroes and leaders are made of.

When success is defined as a grade or specific numerical endpoint, this whole growth journey can fall apart. Okay, not always. But enough that I think it’s important we remind ourselves of the dangers and downside of focusing exclusively on objective measurements.

It starts in school, where focusing on grades can undermine children’s desire and even ability to learn. A strive to be “perfect” can significantly reduce a child’s tendency to “think outside the box” and take risks. A compulsion to “win” and “be the best” can undermine a want to teach and support a peer – when in fact teaching is one of the richest ways of really understanding a subject or problem. Yes, there is great comfort that accompanies a letter or a number. Like “A” or “82”. It’s so objective. So precise. Yet can a series of letters or numbers really capture the capacity of a person’s mind?

No question, we need to be able to gauge and reinforce academic mastery. Understand where tasks have been learned and where there is need for more support. As long as we take into consideration other factors, including attitude, effort, behaviour, and overall sense of personal responsibility. And provided we are able to engender curiosity, engagement, and interest in the process and ideas themselves.

One other point on grades: They can elicit biased outcomes. That is, they tend to motivate the high-marking students while discouraging those who are earning lower grades.

In sport and recreation: 

  • A competitive athlete struggles to stay active after he retires. The lack of medals and competitions remove meaning and he lacks the drive to exercise.
  • A cyclist is obsessed with generating a specific power wattage on all her training rides. She refuses to ever ride with her partner or son for fear they will slow her down.
  • A long-distance runner is so focused on his GPS tracking system, he is highly unmotivated to run if he can’t access his technology.
  • A powerlifter becomes depressed and despondent as she ages and is unable to exceed her PRs anymore.

Measurements and grades can be powerful, awesome drivers. They can show us where we rock and direct exactly what we need to do to improve. They can give real meaning and excitement to our athletic pursuits, ensuring we get stronger, more confident, faster, and feel younger and sharper.

Measurements and grades taken to extreme can remove our appreciation of the awesomeness of effort and the beauty of the journey. They can damage our egos, our bodies, our sense of fulfillment, and our relationships.
